Editor update. Sadly since we last visited, the cafe has closed to be replaced with some up market restaurant. Great shame.
The Fenton Cafe is unique: It is the only one we have visited that is on a working airfield. Once you get out West and South of York, cafes are few and far between, so to discover this gem was welcome indeed. For those who are not familiar with this area, East Leeds Airport is on the site of the former RAF Church Fenton, one of many small airfields built during the Second World War to defend key cities in the North from German bombers. It is now a working airfield for private planes and helicopters (an application for a commercial operating was refused) and a location for various businesses including the excellent Fenton Cafe. We were pretty much the only people in the cafe at 10.30 on a Wednesday, but the staff assured us that the cafe gets very busy with local folk, and is especially popular on pizza nights. Anyway, the coffee was good, (with uniquely a free refill), served in a proper mug, and the Teacakes (“freshly delivered” that morning) were very good. Service was prompt, friendly and efficient. Outside seating on a raised covered deck was great, with lots of airfield activity to keep you occupied. Whilst there is no dedicated places for bikes, you can lean them against the raised deck to keep an eyes on them. The cafe is tucked away well inside the airport, so just cycle up to the barrier which will rise as if by magic and then keep going along the road for a few hundred yards. Well worth a visit.
