The market town of Malton, is the self-proclaimed food capital of North Yorkshire, and if the offerings at Talbot Yard Food Court are anything to go by, then we might be minded to agree. But for the moment we are concentrating on Roost Coffee, a small cafe (nay coffee bar), with an on-site roaster and a limited cake offering. Set in a small courtyard with lots of outside bench seating and space inside, this has recently seen us visit several times. The coffee is excellent; one of the best cups around these parts and whilst the food offering just consists of four or five cake choices, the ones that we have sampled were excellent. We cannot offer our usual “tea-cake test”, cos a Teacake they do not serve, but you should not let this put you off. Cycling facilities are ok, with lots of lean-against wall space and a badly positioned bike stand. But just off the main road, after or before the turn off to Castle Howard, (depending on which way you approach it), it is very well located. As an addendum, two of our party on the last visit, thought a Pork-Pie was a good idea, even if we still had 25 miles left to negotiate, and the local butcher shop “Food 2 Remember” (also located in the Food court), were happy to supply. Pork pie with Piccalilli (inside the pastry not as an accompaniment), was the choice and one of the party remarked “it was one of the best port pie he had tasted” and promptly popped one in his back jersey pocket to take home to his daughter.
